tamm, with the california highway patrol. was this done on purpose? >> we don't know. 4a.m. this morning, an unmarked milpitas police department vehicle was traveling northbound on 680 northbound near berryessa, truck from struck from behind by the ford bronco, the driver was transported to the hospital. he did have some injuries. we have officers en route to get a statement. we don't know what happened. >> reporter: we heard reports he had blood on him, the driver, he might have been injured beforehand, can you tell me about his condition? >> he did sustain injuries. as far as where, we're still under investigation. >> is he talking? has he been responsive to police as to why he hit the police officer's car? >> he was when he first got out of the vehicle, at the time he was being transported he wasn't. we don't have that information. >> reporter: he's being detained, arrested? >> just transported to the hospital at this time for his medical condition so he can be treated for that and we have

officers en route to get a statement as far as what happened from his version of the story. >> how is the police officer? >> everyone is fine. >> reporter: thank you very much, sergeant. again, we will follow up on any updates on this case and keep monitoring it. cars are still here but both -- the police officer is okay, the driver, they have a lot of questions to ask him but we will follow this throughout the morning. reporting live from milpitas, channel 2 news. we're also following developing news, we're getting word of another carnival cruise ship in trouble. this time it's a cruise ship docked in the eastern caribbean. several passengers on board the carnival ship dream are telling stories of power outages and overflowing toilets, a month after app on-board fire crippled a ship in the gulf of mexico. we'll give you an update on the story as we get more information. back here at home some parents at a pleasanton high school plan to keep kids home

this morning, they are going to have extra police patrols at foothill high. tara moriarty is there, this is one of three threats at local schools. >> reporter: that's right. we're here live at foothill high school, where the cheerleading squad pulled up moments ago aheaded to los angeles for a national competition. we had a chance to speak to some parents here briefly, and they say they are very pleased with the way the school has handled everything. school is open today but district officials here are taking no chances. they beefed up patrols and we noticed a squad car on the other side of the building after the discovery of a threatening note found in a girls bathroom tuesday. we have blurred out the profanity but it read, i hate everyone at this school, watch me shoot everyone, on march 14, i swear to god. some parents and students are apprehensive about attending, some choosing to keep kids

home for the day and police are on alert in four schools. in tracy there's security at kimball high school after two students found threatening graffiti in a girls bathroom. not far away official also evacuated tracy high after two menacing notes including one about a bomb found in a boys bathroom. and the fremont school district put thornton junior high on lockdown for a half hour because of a bomb threat. fremont police are still investigating that incident. authorities don't believe that any of these incidents are connected. officials in pleasanton sent out a phone call and e-mail explaining the situation and want anyone who might know who wrote that note to come forward. they say that they just want to help the students. overnight a magnitude 4.6 quake shook sonoma county after 2 a.m., 14 miles northeast of healdsburg. it was larger than usual for the area but not a lot of

people felt it. the sheriff's department tells us it only took two calls and there are no reports of damage. an earthquake early warning system passed a major test in california. how it could change the way we respond to quakes in the future. now to continuing coverage. election of a new pope. pope francis began his first morning as the new pontiff by demonstrating the humility he's known for. without a grand entrance, he went to rome's main basilica dedicate to the virgin mary through a side door. he also stopped by the hotel to pick up his luggage. pope francis will be installed as pope on tuesday. the 76-year-old from argentina is the first pontiff from the americas. we're watching everything live this morning, the crowd at st.peters's square not as large. this is a live picture from vatican city. pope francis is posting a visit

to see emeritus pope benedict outside rome. at 9:00 this morning pacific time the pope will lead mass in the sistine chapel with all the cardinals. this morning many bay area catholics are echoes the sentiments of those across the globe. we are in okay lan with local reaction. >> reporter: it's still quiet in oakland, weekday mass starts at 7:10 this morning. so many in the bay area watched and followed the election of pope francis at the vatican a day ago, local residents learned of his prior work as arch beneficiary off of buenos aires, his work with the poor, the first pope from latin america. he will be contending with controversial social issues of the west, such as gay marriage, women's rights, abortion and contraception. some hope he will bring much needed change to the catholic church. others say don't expect too

much in terms of a shift on many hot button social issues. >> he takes a bus to work, said no to the papal palace, his real solidarity is with the poor. he's on the social justice issues but firm in the teaching of the church on the full issues, like gay marriage, abortion, contraception, which i know is not what a lot of people want to see. >> reporter: for so many catholics the election was a time of celebration that will feature in masses today around the bay area, including a special thanksgiving mass at st. mary's in san francisco early this afternoon. back here in the east bay, coming up at 6 a.m., we will hear from a local scholar about what the new pope could mean for the ongoing sex abuse scandal facing the catholic church. we're live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. on our website we have a

tab dedicated to the pope's selection and more local reaction. sal is coming back to get you where you need to go. you're watching the east shore. >> we're looking at the traffic that is doing well. we had some earlier road work but we're checking to make sure it's all taken care of. and it is. the traffic here in berkeley looks good, all the way down to the macarthur maze. when you get to the toll plaza, they also had road work here and that is gone as well. traffic is off to a decent start at the bay bridge toll plaza, no major problems on the bridge getting into san francisco. we're looking at san jose traffic, northbound 280 does look good, so does 101 and 85, so we're off to a good start. notice the fog is not as dense as it was yesterday. let's go to mark. yeah, that's right on with the observations, the fog not nearly as extreme as yet but a few patches over the next few hours, especially right around the bay itself. for today patchy morning fog,

welcome back. 5:13. six flags discovery kingdom is doing some damage control following a video that's making the rounds on the internet. it shows an animal trainer repeatedly punching a white tiger in the face. the tape prompted a lot of angry phone calls since it surfaced this week. however, the owners of six flags point out the video was taken ten years ago, and that the trainer was fired shortly after that incident. a whistle blower said veterans affairs with health information on gulf war syndrome and ignored suicidal veterans.

at a hearing on capitol hill, he testified the v.a. withheld research that proved a link between nerve gas and gulf war illness. he also said veterans identified as suicidal in studies were not offered follow- up care. president obama heads back to capitol hill today to meet with senate republicans and house democrats, the third trip this week to meet with lawmakers, trying to get republicans and democrats to agree on a budget. yesterday senate democrats unveiled their budget proposal calling for increases in both spending and taxes. the republican budget plan focuses on cutting spending. the president will release his budget ideas early next month. an exclusive report shows the obama administration wants to give spy agencies more access to your bank accounts. this push is getting the

attention of privacy experts. kyla? >> reporter: the news agency, reuters, says the obama administration is drawing up plans to give all u.s. spy agencies access to a massive database that holds financial information on americans and others who bank in the u.s. right now the fbi has full access to that bank of information. reuters says the obama administration wants the cia and national security agency to also have full access. the goal is to track suspicious activity that could help the feds spot terrorist activity, the article cites the treasurely department saying this is legal and that would be under the patriotic act. privacy experts argue too many ordinary u.s. citizens would be unnecessarily put in the spotlight. reuters says this plan is in its early stages but i'll tell you what sort of information the u.s. spy agencies would be

looking for in your bank accounts when i see you next hour. live in washington, kyla campbell, channel 2 news. a southern california earthquake warning system just passed a major test. monday that system gave scientists a 35-second warning before a 4.7 quake in riverside county. that may not sound like much but that can be enough time for people to take cover or to stop trains. scientists say that system doesn't predict earthquakes, but it spots the first pulses of energy when a fault ruptures. that system is still in the pilot stage. 5:17. sal is keeping an eye on traffic. what are you looking at, sal? >> we're looking at a bunch of east bay highways, so everything really, just to make sure all the road work has been picked up. so far we haven't found a lot. in san francisco, there was also road work, that's also been picked up. it's been pretty smooth so far,

and sometimes these things don't stay that way but right now smooth for a thursday coming into san francisco. from the east bay it is nice. all those lanes at the toll plaza have been cleared up. if you're driving into east bay, heyward to fremont, the traffic here is off to a nice start headed south, no trouble into the south bay. 5:18, let's go to mark. the fog is not as widespread as yesterday. we have a batch of high clouds paying us a visit, they will continue to be a factor for the rest of the day. as far as the fog, the advisories, right in the middle of the bay for the boaters out there until 2:00 this afternoon, there is the chance it could be lifted earlier as the fog layer lifts. as far as current numbers, they are in the 40s to 50s, downtown san francisco 48 degrees, oakland 52, mountain view 53 and livermore reporting 50 degrees. today just a little bit cooler, this area of high pressure

produced warmth yesterday, this begins to scoot to the east but high clouds in the pacific, so for today, temperatures coming down on average 3 to 6 degrees from yesterday's very warm readings, and then into the afternoon hours partly sunny, so it's not going to be complete sunshine throughout the day. this morning temperatures mid- 40s to mid-50s, into the afternoon hours by 12:00, partly sunny, 58 to 70. lots of filtered sunshine moving into the region. forecast highs, 67 in san francisco. fairfield 75, heyward 71, san jose 74, morgan hill 79 degrees. here is a look at the five-day forecast, with your weekend in view, minor changes as we approach the weekend, partly cloudy skies, a drop-off by sunday and into monday of next week. coming up we'll take a look at the lake tahoe forecast, and grade the weekend for skiing

and snowboarding. european markets opened slightly higher, the nikkei with a 1.2% gain. hong kong up slightly morning a 1/4%, most asian markets slipped overnight. checking into our numbers, the dow winning streak stretching into nine days, the longest since november of 1996. 7th day in a row with a record high close. 5 points is all it took. the nasdaq and s&p are up slightly, and all three indicate a higher opening this morning, as far as the futures go. also jpmorgan chase revised forecast for the u.s. economic growth, expecting analyzed first quarter growth of 2.3%, that's up from the earlier forecast of 1.5%. jp morgan analysts say stronger than expected retail sales in february are partially responsible for that boost. pam, 5:20. a ban on pg&e smart meters,

in bakersfield. a trucker turned it over to a high school teacher and his archiving class. they managed to identify the person awarded the medal, a soldier killed when the japanese attacked pearl harbor. >> it's just amazing that that's coming back to our family over 70 years later, and some amazing work from the people in bakersfield. >> the sailor's niece is the closest relative who said one of her brothers used to live in bakersfield and the purple heart may have become lost there. construction is set to begin on a project to rebuild lexington elementary school in los gatos, located on old santa cruz highway, demolished in the next few days and replaced with a larger campus. the new campus will be able to accommodate twice as many students and it will be earthquake safe. a ground breaking ceremony was held yesterday, $24 million project is expected to be

completed in june 2014. pg&e has been honoring a moratorium on installing smart meters in the stay, challenging customers the charge of an extra fee if they want to opt out. the city leaders want pg&e to stop installing smart meters until the public utilities commission issues a ruling on the opt-out fee, the ruling is expected in the fall. bart passengers will have to wait a little longer to see more of the new vinyl seats installed on trains. bart started replacing the old cloth seats two years ago. the change was so popular bart wanted to expand but the company doing the work said it wouldn't be able to do the extra work. now bart has to start a new bidding process for that contract. now it is 5:25. going back over to sal to check in on the commute. >> traffic is doing well around the bay area. we're starting in san jose, northbound 280 does look good.

>> welcome back. thursday, march 14, i've dave clark. >> i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. mark is here with the weather forecast. we're still talking about 60s and 70s. we could be talking about cold rain and low snow levels in the bay area, but the complete opposite for today. this morning patchy fog resurfacing coastside around the bay, this afternoon partly sunny, temperatures ranging from the 60s to 70s, a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. more forecast highs in a few minutes but sal right now has an update on traffic. well, good morning to you. traffic on interstate 880 is looking good as you drive through the coliseum area and

head up to downtown oakland. also morning commute looks good driving on the san mateo bridge. let's go back to the desk. we continue to follow developing news from the south bay where a police officer was rammed by another driver. janine is in milpitas this morning with new information we just learned from the chp. janine? >> reporter: pam, we know that two milpitas police officers were involved in this accident in an unmarked police car. you can see the chp is here still on the scene investigating. the accident happened in san jose but they caught up with the driver in milpitas at 680 and jacqueline, where the jacqueline on-ramp is. the unmarked police car that was just driven away, it was involved in this accident, this all happened just after 4:00 this morning, two milpitas police officers were driving northbound on 680 when a driver of the bronco hit the back of the car near the berryessa exit in san jose.

police caught up with the male driver at 680 and jacqueline, the injuries were not injured by the driver of bronco had blood on him and cuts on him. it's unknown if he hurt himself, if he was in a fight with somebody, or if he hit the officer's car on purpose and got the injuries, the chp is investigating all this. >> undercover or in full uniform, we don't know if it's on purpose or an accident. better safe than sorry. >> reporter: the driver of the bronco was handcuffed, being detained, he's being taken to the hospital. later he will be questioned by chp officers. he was cooperative at first, we're told, with police but later stopped talking and it's unclear if that was due to the medical condition he was in. but right now, again, still on the scene, still investigating, again they want to be very careful about how they handle

it because anytime undercover officers or even if they are in uniform they are not sure if somebody is trying to target them because they are a police officer. it's unknown if that was the case here. reporting live in milpitas, ktvu channel 2 news. a man was arrested after trying to escape from deputies by jump the into the oakland estuary last night. deputies spotted a stolen car at the oakland aquatic center. the driver took off leading them on a chase down the embarquadero before he hit a ups truck and got out of the car, jumped into the oakland estuary and started swimming. he then hid on a boat until he was arrested. police in concord are investigating shots fired at two buses. both incidents happened yesterday on clayton road. the windows on both buses were damaged, but luckily no one was hurt. police want to know whether a pellet gun was used. so far they don't have suspects

and no arrests have been made, if you have any information call concord police. an 8-year-old girl is recovering from injuries after an accident yesterday afternoon. the girl was flown to children's hospital in oakland, napa police have not released circumstances of the accident or whether the driver will face charges. students and staff at san francisco city college are planning to walk off college before marching to city hall protesting cuts being made to the school as it fights to keep its accreditation and balances a budget. tomorrow is the deadline for city college to submit proof of finances to an acreditting commission, it could be forced to close if it loses status, a decision is expect the in june. 5:34. we have new video of the new pope, pope francis. the vatican released these

thousands, the name taken from st. francis of assisi, the 13th century friar who lived a life of poverty. >> one of the wonderful things about the cardinal choosing the name francis, he's pointing us toward renewing. >> reporter: renewing the image of the church is a major task for the new pontiff, the electing cardinals consider him a seasoned and popular pastor who would draw followers to the faith. >> where he comes from is gravy. we got a lot of good gravy with a man coming now from latin america. you talk about a booster shot to the church in the americas, this is a real blessing. >> reporter: restoring the image will be no easy task following a litany of sex abuse scandals. >> they picked a person from the third world who has some reputation of dealing with the issue and he may sweep house

and do something concrete. >> reporter: time will tell. one of the issues from last evening that stands out is when the new pope, pope francis, rocked back on his heels, he paused for a minute, a moment of silence to breathe it in. 100,000, 150,000 packed into st.peters's square did the same thing. when that many people get quiet, it amplified the emotion and energy just went through the roof. it reverberated across rome. >> craig boswell from rome. joe biden will lead the american delegation for the installation ceremony next week, the first roman catholic vice-president. he's happy to have the chance to deliver his well wishes to the new pope personally. pope francis and his installation mass is scheduled for next tuesday. musicians of the san francisco symphony are on

strike. ♪[music]♪ more than four months of contract negotiations could not resolve differences on pay, benefits and pensions. the musicians wanted a 5% pay hike which is necessary to keep them in the company of other elite orchestras such as los angeles, which is why they are donning the caps. symphony executives say costs are rising faster than revenue and their latest proposal would maintain elite status. >> the proposal retains their status as the third highest paid orchestra in the country, and we really think that's important. >> the idea of attracting young players to the symphony is something we're very concerned about. that's our life blood. >> the symphony cancelled today's performance and others are in jeopardy as well unless an agreement is reached. surfing the net is about to get faster in one silicon valley city, san jose leaders will make an announcement about a free wi-fi network in the downtown core. it will be one of the fastest wi-fi connections in the

country. officials say the new network will benefit drivers by improving the speed of transaction, at pay to park meters. time now 5:38. sal is back. how is the san mateo bridge? >> it's doing okay, dave and pam. westbound traffic looks good headed to the highrise, no major problems here. if you are driving, oh, to highway 101, and i want to mention the fog is not as widespread as it was yesterday. driving-wise should be better visibility for you. bay bridge toll plaza, we're getting a backup now at the toll plaza, no major problems but you can see some lanes there, the cash lanes are getting stacked up. if you're driving in san jose, northbound 101 and 280 are off to a decent start. now let's go to mark. >> good morning. this early thursday morning, the batch of high clouds moving into northern california, in addition to some fog out there we have a fog advisory in place, primarily for the boaters for san francisco bay until 2:00 this afternoon but

we have fog shooting across the bay to berkley richmond, the albany area, still a few leftover patches around the region. not nearly as widespread as yesterday. not even as dense as yesterday. as far as current temperatures, they are in the 40s, for most of the region. 40s and 50s. downtown san francisco 48. san jose 53, and livermore checking in at 50 degrees at last check. for today for the coast, still some patchy fog this morning, partly cloudy into the afternoon hours, high clouds on the satellite will continue to pay us a visit as we head into the afternoon hours. right around the bay the same deal, temperatures warmer though, 68 to 73. and our forecast highs today a little bit cooler compared to yesterday, not a big change but still warm numbers, 74 to 77 degrees, a few upper 70s for the warmest locations of the bay area. the other side in the lower 60s toward pacifica and half moon bay. the five-day forecast with the weekend in view, we'll continue to hold steady for your friday,

that mentioned today's date. new develop, the from upstate new york a man suspected of shooting six people and killing for was killed in a shootout. the 64-year-old kurt myers was hiding in an abandoned building. the manhunt started after police say myers set his apartment on fire. they say he drove to a barber shot and shot four people, killing two, and went to an oil change business and killed two more men. >> there was no apparent rational motorrive to the best of our knowledge at this time to provoke these attacks. >> police went into the building this morning and found myers in the basement. they say myers shot a police dog, police shot back and he was killed. senator dianne feinstein's assault weapons ban will likely be approved by a senate committee, expected to get through the democratic-led senate judiciary committee probably on a party line vote but will have a tough time

sex offenders violators went up. a lot of them serve very little time because of overcrowding. now we're hearing that keith olbermann and current-tv reached a settlement in a $50 million lawsuit. that settlement was reached during a mediation session in san francisco tuesday. we don't know the terms. olbermann sued after he was fired last year. the network counter sued saying he breached the terms of his contract. current tv's founder, al gore, recently sold the network to al- jazeera. if you cross the bay bridge before 10:00 on a week-day morning, you may see several cars pulled over to the side of the road and their hazard lights are on. it's not a massive car breakdown, it's drivers trying to avoid paying the higher tolls. after 10:00 in the morning, the price drops from $6 down to $4. the chp says that's illegal to pull over and then wait for the

good thursday morning. temperature, 60s and 70s. landing gear problems may have caused a small plane to skid off a runway in san jose, landing gear collapsed and part of the wings broke off, both people walked away unharmed. the cost to rename san francisco international airport may be a lot less than first thought. supervisor david campos has been pushing to rename it after harvey milk, originally the name change was estimated at $4 million. the new report by the city's budget and legislative office says the city would only be responsible for changing the signs at the airport. that would cost about $350,000.

davis police say they are investigating the brutal beating of a gay man as a possible hate crime. the 31-year-old was hospitalized for his injuries. his family worries he may suffer long-term neurological problems. the family said he and a friend were walking home from a party over the weekend when a man attacked him while yelling homophobic slurses. davis police hope to make an arrest soon. an effort is underway to allow some bars and night clubs to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. san francisco state senator mark leno said it could create more jobs, the extra two hours could be good for business but it could also mean late night headaches. >> people will be drinking too much, and then they would be driving, right? i think it would be too late, the noise and i just don't think it's good for the community. >> several big cities including chicago and new york city
